Alex Egan is based in Norfolk UK.
Alex went to the Arts Educational Trust in London to train in ballet and contemporary dance; she switched to visual arts and did an arts foundation course at Shrewsbury and then went on to Bristol and gained a degree in Fine Art.
She was self employed in the mid 1980’s as a specialist paint decorator when painted furniture and rag rolled walls were all the rage, then an apprentice storyboard illustrator in London for all the big ad companies, paid a pittance. Marriage, children, and with a screen printing business, poor as the proverbial, preceded a big move from Shropshire to Norfolk which gave her more time to paint.
She is a member of The Arborealists an artist collective passionate about trees and the ways in which they can be creatively documented and displayed.
Alex is the tree artist in residence at the Somerleyton Estate in Suffolk.
She regularly exhibits with The Fairhurst Gallery in Norwich along with numerous group and solo exhibitions including two individual shows, Tree Portraits (2015) and Back to My Roots (2016) as well as featuring in If We Opened People Up We’d Find Landscapes (2019). Alex has exhibited as part of the Inheritance exhibit at the Norwich Castle Museum (2018). Mentionable commissions include depicting veteran trees on the Sandringham Estate for the celebration of HRH Prince of Wales 70th birthday, the historic Kett’s Oak at Ryston, the Daylesford Estate in Oxfordshire and Houghton Estate in Norfolk.
In January 2021 Alex was invited to spend time at Marchmont House on the Scottish Borders to portray 4 of the extraordinary trees there including ‘The Tree Of Wonder’ a magnificent, massive ancient beech. This culminated in helping to run a workshop later that year called ‘Conversations with Trees’ A wonderful weekend retreat where guests enjoyed a contemplative walk amongst the wonderful trees, then participating in a drawing workshop. Some fascinating talks regarding the history of trees in British landscape art, making oak gore ink and talks with some of the artists in residence there.
